Children's Day School

Our dynamic and caring staff provide educational and behavioral programming individualized to meet each student’s unique needs. Amego’s day school operates 237 days a year. Our teaching is based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, supervised by Licensed and Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) who provide ongoing support to staff, families and caregivers working with each student. At Amego, parents and caregivers are a welcomed part of the treatment team. The Amego Children’s Division is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC), and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Educational Support

Amego School supports the individual needs of each child. School staff work collaboratively, with input from parents and other professionals, to ensure each student has an individually tailored education plan to address their most significant needs.

The school uses a variety of assessments to help identify and determine the educational needs of each student throughout the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process. Teachers, with the support of Educational Directors and input from other professionals, determine each student’s precise instructional needs, ensuring optimal opportunities for progress. The school provides highly structured direct instruction based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)  principles and techniques across academic and functional life skills. Team meetings with parental participation are held annually, and parents receive updated progress reports throughout the year. Amego encourages open communication with families and caregivers and welcomes parents to come throughout the year to discuss progress. Administrators, teachers and other staff are always available to discuss current goals and encourage generalization of skills across school and home environments.

Clinical Support

Clinical support and services are provided by Board Certified and Licensed Behavior Analysts. Behavior Analysts individually assess and customize a care plan specific to each student.   Individualized Behavior Intervention Plans are developed following a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to target specific behavioral challenges. All clinical interventions are supported by research, reflect best practices, and are designed to increase socially appropriate functional behaviors while decreasing problematic behaviors that may exist. The clinical team provides ongoing monitoring of data that allows us to ensure the efficacy of programming for each student.

Vocational and Transitional Services

As students reach age 14, their team will begin to develop programming that will best prepare them for their post-secondary vision. Amego’s Vocational and Transition Specialist will work closely with students and their teachers to identify relative strengths and weaknesses in functional life skills and pre-vocational skills using the Amego Pre-vocational and Employability Skills Inventory. With this knowledge, students will start developing job skills in their classroom and across the school building that capitalize on their strengths and systematically boost their confidence and ability in their areas of weakness. As students approach ages 18-22, they are placed in campus-based or community-based job-like activities that aim to increase functional job skills and, of equal importance, target critical soft skills such as appropriate socialization in the workplace and natural support development. Amego has partnerships with organizations in our community that welcome our students as volunteers and employees when they are ready. As students approach age 22, we work closely with families, school districts and assigned adult agencies to plan for and provide as seamless a transition into adulthood as possible.

Therapeutic Services

All therapeutic services are delivered in a collaborative, consultative approach working closely with all school team members. Therapeutic professionals provide staff with training, assist with program development, monitor student progress, and assist with data collection. If a student’s IEP includes the need for Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or Speech and Language services, the Amego School has licensed professionals to support each student. Across all therapeutic disciplines, students are evaluated individually through a multi-factored process. Collective goals are developed annually for IEPs that address individual areas of need relative to any therapeutic objective.

  • Occupational Therapy- An Occupational Therapist (OT) and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides evaluations, consultation, and direct services to students requiring therapy targeting visual-motor and fine-motor skills and giving specialized support for a range of activities of daily living, including writing, hygiene, behavioral regulation and feeding programs. Our OT and COTA integrate support for students throughout their day through consultation with staff and provide direct one-on-one or group therapy services as determined by individual student needs.

  • Physical Therapy- A Physical Therapist (PT) and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provide comprehensive evaluations to assess each student’s gross motor abilities and develop appropriate goals. Our PT and PTA promote safety across settings by providing individualized or group gross motor treatment while collaborating closely with the Adaptive Physical Education instructors and other therapists to ensure students build critical skills.

  • Speech and Language Therapy- A Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) and Speech and Language Assistant creates programs based on comprehensive evaluations to facilitate communication for all students, using a range of individualized low-to-high-tech supports based on each student’s needs. In addition to one-on-one and small group therapy services, the SLP ensures that all staff members are trained in delivering programming designed to facilitate speech and language development and provide regular consultation to staff to implement communication supports across a student’s day.
